In the heart of Kalongo Town Council in northern Uganda, a quiet revolution is taking place. Dozens of children aged six to fourteen gather every week with one shared dream — to play, learn, and rise through the power of football. Behind this movement stands Mr. Kidega Michael Oryema, the visionary founder and director of the Foundation Football Academy Kalongo (FFAK) — a grassroots initiative transforming young lives through sports, education, and moral guidance.
A Vision Born from Passion and Purpose
Mr. Oryema’s story begins not with wealth or privilege, but with passion. A lifelong football enthusiast — both player and fan — he saw a painful truth in his community: many talented children in Kalongo had no chance to develop their abilities or pursue their dreams. Poverty, lack of access, and limited awareness meant their potential often went unnoticed and unfulfilled.
Rather than accepting that reality, Oryema decided to change it.
“I wanted to uplift this age group and help them realize their untapped potential,” he says. “If properly nurtured from a young age, they can compete at regional, national, and international levels.”
With determination and community spirit, he founded Foundation Football Academy in August 2021, bringing together like-minded supporters who believed that football could be a gateway to education, opportunity, and personal growth.
Beyond Football: Building Character and Community
At its core, Foundation Football Academy is about more than just the game. It’s a holistic program that focuses on nurturing the body, mind, and spirit of each young player.
Children receive not only athletic training but also mentorship, moral guidance, and exposure to practical skills like agriculture and small business management. This combination builds discipline, teamwork, and purpose — the foundations of leadership and long-term success.
For many of the academy’s children, football is a lifeline. It provides structure, safety, and hope — especially for those from low-income families who might otherwise miss out on educational and developmental opportunities.
“Some children come from very humble backgrounds,” says Oryema. “If their talent is recognized, it could open doors to scholarships and sponsorships, helping them further their education and change their futures.”
Recognition and Growth
The academy’s impact quickly caught the community’s attention. In October 2021, Mr. Kidega Michael Oryema received the Professor Dr. JJ Otim Development Award from The Kalongo Times, along with a grant of UGX 354,846 — a recognition of his contribution to youth empowerment in Kalongo.
Since then, the academy has grown to include 56 young players, divided into three age-based categories:
-
Group I: Ages 6–9
-
Group II: Ages 10–12
-
Group III: Ages 13–14
Training sessions are held at St. Teresa Girls School playing field, provided on a temporary basis while the academy searches for a permanent home. Despite limited facilities, enthusiasm runs high.
The academy has already organized friendly matches — including one against Horizon Kitgum — and is preparing to travel to Gulu for further exposure. Each match offers more than competition; it’s a chance for these children to test their skills, build confidence, and dream bigger.
Challenges Along the Way
Like most grassroots projects, Foundation Football Academy faces a host of challenges — but none that have dampened its spirit.
-
Lack of equipment: Many players train barefoot or with improvised shoes, and uniforms are mismatched hand-me-downs.
-
Limited facilities: The playing field lacks goalposts, so they use eucalyptus poles instead.
-
Financial constraints: The children contribute a membership fee of just UGX 4,000, but many families can’t afford even that.
To fully equip the team, the academy needs:
-
8 goalpost poles and 2 nets (estimated UGX 550,000)
-
Football boots and uniforms for 56 players
-
Training equipment and footballs
Despite these challenges, Oryema remains optimistic.
“We are determined to make this work,” he says with a smile. “With a little support, we can give these children the tools they deserve to reach their potential.”
The Power of Teamwork and Vision
Behind every successful initiative is a team — and Foundation Football Academy is no different. A small but dedicated group helps Oryema manage operations, including an Assistant Director, Team Advisor, Coach, Patron, Spokesperson, Secretary, and Spiritual Leader.
Their collective goal? To transform the academy into a registered FUFA (Federation of Uganda Football Associations) program for under-14s and to build a permanent training facility in Kalongo.
In the short term, the team hopes to:
-
Acquire proper kits, goalposts, and balls.
-
Participate in regional tournaments and inter-district matches.
In the long term, they aim to:
-
Secure their own football pitch and club infrastructure.
-
Train coaches and youth mentors to expand outreach.
-
Develop an educational scholarship fund for exceptional players.
Why Grassroots Football Matters in Uganda
Football is more than entertainment — it’s an engine for economic and social growth. Across Africa, grassroots football programs like Foundation Football Academy are proving that sport can be a tool for transformation.
By keeping youth engaged in positive, structured activities, these projects reduce the risk of crime, drug abuse, and school dropout rates. They also cultivate values such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership — qualities essential for national development.
Kalongo, a growing town with boundless potential, needs such programs to empower its next generation. As Oryema puts it:
“Kalongo is a young town full of opportunities. If we can guide the youth to turn challenges into opportunities, we can drive our own economic growth.”
